ODU: A University with a Global Impact

While Monarchs everywhere celebrate the dawn of a new decade, ODU stands ready to embrace the opportunities to come. We've seen over the 10 past years that we live in an increasingly fast-paced, interconnected world. As a result, the greatest opportunities of the new decade could be felt throughout the world.

Old Dominion University has been on the forefront of giving our students, faculty and community a global perspective to thrive in our diverse world. Academic programs and faculty members have evaluated curriculum to equip tomorrow's work force. New programs, including a Global Executive MBA are coming online. Over 1,400 international students from 106 countries are currently enrolled. And alumni are living and working in 73 countries.

In this edition, we share stories about a few of the programs and people that are increasing Old Dominion University's impact far beyond the walls of campus. As you will learn, ODU is not bound by geography. We are engaging with the world in which we live.

Distance Learning: Education from Anywhere
What began in the mid-1980's as a novel option for students has evolved into a high-tech and progressive system for learning. Today ODU is one of the largest providers of distance learning degree programs in the world offering 57 high quality, cost-effective degree programs – 31 bachelor's degrees, 21 master's degrees and 5 doctoral degrees.

Staff members are located at nearly every community college in the Commonwealth of Virginia, at sites in Arizona and Washington and at major military bases, offering students a personal connection and support system. Internet students and video streamers come from all over the world, including service members taking classes while deployed.

With a current enrollment of over 4,000 students and having graduated 3500 alumni, Interim Assistant Vice President Andy Casiello is proud to declare: "the footprint for ODU's Distance Learning program is the planet earth."

We will begin sharing accomplishments and happenings from the program in future editions of Alumni e-News. In the meantime, view a recent video highlighting ODU's Distance Learning or learn more online at www.dl.odu.edu.

ODU's Rich Military Tradition Creates Worldwide Impact
The university owes credit to its rich military tradition for spreading Monarch influence throughout the world. A large part of this tradition begins with the two ROTC units on campus - both of which have recently reached milestones.

The ODU Army ROTC battalion, recently recognized as the sixth largest unit of the 262 nationwide, celebrated its 40th anniversary on campus last year. Just next door, the Hampton Roads NROTC program, run in conjunction with neighboring schools NSU and Hampton University, commissioned the program's 800th officer in 2009. Today, the two units together proudly honor over 100 of their alumni serving tours of duty overseas or abroad.

Old Dominion has garnered recognition for supporting service members' educational opportunities. In the December 2009 issue of Military Advanced Education magazine, ODU was named to a select list of “military-friendly colleges and universities” and of the 129 schools listed, ODU was one of 37 cited for “notable veterans support programs.”

As we add service members to the Alumni Association roster, they will continue to  spread Monarch spirit throughout the world. If you are an alum now serving in the armed forces, share your story. Register with the Alumni Association online and submit a Class Note sharing news and photos from your adventures around the world.

  Monarch Tennis: An International Family
When Tennis Coach Darryl Cummings began having great success recruiting international players in 1995, he had only been on the job for 2 years. Since then, he's been at it for 13 more, bringing some of the most talented tennis champs to ODU from places you would be hard pressed to pronounce.

His current teams start players from nine countries including Israel, Brazil, France, Poland, Serbia, Germany and Venezuela. His athletes bring a work ethic, a scholarly attitude and produce wins on the court. But even more importantly, they have formed a bond with each other – and with those who have come before them – that has resulted in a multi-generational and incredibly diverse international tennis family. Learn about one product of the Monarch Tennis Family that could shape the game worldwide.

  ODU Wrestling Gaining Notoriety
Coach Steve Martin, already the winningest wrestling coach in ODU history, is committed to making ODU wrestling one of the top programs not only on the East Coast, but in the nation. Throughout the first part of the 2009-2010 season, Martin has made progress with his team receiving recognition in the CAA and on the Division 1 National circuit.

The Monarchs stand first in the CAA as a team, with individuals included in the top six in nine out of ten weight classes. Three individuals, Junior James Nicholson as well as Seniors Chris Brown and Jesse Strawn have remained ranked nationally in the top 15 of their weight classes since pre-season. As a team, ODU has been ranked as high as 22nd in the nation. Two upcoming home matches will play a large role in the team's post-season hopes – one versus No. 24 UVA on Saturday, February 6 and another against NC State on Sunday, February 7.

Follow the team on odusports.com as Monarch wrestling continually gains notoriety with stellar performances on the mat.
