ODU's Year of Success and New Year of Opportunities
|
| |
With the fall semester almost complete and the new year rapidly approaching, we have begun to reflect on 2009, a year marked with continued traditions and new ventures. Over the past months the university has been recognized continually for academic excellence, community influence and athletic prowess.
Old Dominion University would not have enjoyed the great accomplishments over the past year without our alumni who reinforce its mission. Through generous gifts of time, experience, talents and resources, ODU's former students have continually strengthened the university's significance and influence, here in Hampton Roads and beyond.
Thank you for your support of our alma mater in 2009. We hope you are inspired as you read about a few of ODU's programs and individuals that you helped flourish in the past year. We look forward to sharing many more stories of success in 2010.

| All Gifts "Come Back in Time:" Scholarship Luncheon 2009 |
The results of a gift to ODU might not always be tangible or immediately obvious. Remica Bingham '02, however, begged to differ in her 2009 Scholarship Luncheon address.
Now an accomplished poet and dedicated teacher, Bingham shared her story as proof that small gifts add up to big opportunities. As she emphasized, "your interest in the value of education" has and will "forever change lives." Watch the video of her inspiring address on YouTube. |

| 10 Ways to Support ODU in 2010 (Check Not Necessarily Required!) |
The achievements of 2009 offer ample evidence that alumni can strengthen Old Dominion University. And yet it's often surprising to discover that some of the most meaningful contributions one can make are not necessarily financial and often take very little time or effort.
The Old Dominion Alumni Association Guide to Giving Back to ODU shares ten small ways to give back to the university in 2010. Download the guide and find your own way to support our alma mater in the new year. |

School of Dental Hygiene Continuing ODU's Volunteer Tradition
Be on the lookout for cars bearing signs: "Old Dominion University, School of Dental Hygiene, Serving the Community." Dental hygiene students, via service learning, are delivering preventive and therapeutic oral health services to the homeless, nursing home residents, and persons with physical, sensory, intellectual, and developmental disabilities throughout Hampton Roads. Reaching special populations that receive little to no dental care, students and faculty leave campus weekly to access people where they live, learn, work or play.
The program's commitment to improving oral health in our local community is apparent in the numbers. Last year, the school provided professional dental hygiene services to over 6,500 persons in the community who could not afford care at an estimate of over $85,000 pro bono. The Gene W. Hirschfeld School of Dental Hygiene continues ODU's volunteer tradition by serving some of our region's most needy citizens.
View a recent video highlighting the School of Dental Hygiene facilities, programs and people making this service possible. |

The Dominion Fund: Small Gifts Build Strong Foundations
Old Dominion University's foundation is secured by the number of those who give to the university rather than the amount of their gifts. The Dominion Fund provides the opportunity to give to the university financially and ensure the funds are directed to specific initiatives or academic departments.
In this season of giving, we hope that you will consider a donation to your alma mater, no matter how small. With your tax-deductible gift ODU can impact many future generations of Monarchs. Click here to make a gift to The Dominion Fund online.

An Artist's Gift: Patti Meyers '69 Donates Painting to University's Permanent Collection
Nationally renowned artist Patti Meyers '69 has often proclaimed her gratitude for her ODU education. Early in the fall semester, Meyer decided to say thank you in her signature way – by donating a painting to the university's permanent collection. "Parisian Tutu," a piece representing her abstract figurative style, will be on display at the Baron & Ellin Gordon Art Galleries until January 5 and will then find a permanent home in the College of Arts and Letters.
During the presentation of the painting to President Broderick, Meyers spoke of the university's role in her development as an individual and an artist. "I have pride and a sense of accomplishment for what ODU provided for me and many thousands of students who came from modest backgrounds. This university was my stepping stone for the many achievements in my life," she said. Thanks to her generous gift, the students who pass her painting will find inspiration in both her personal story and obvious talent. Read more here.
