SCHEV Award Winner Dr. Mark Butler's Inspiring Approach to Teaching
In February 2011 ODU's Dr. Mark Butler received recognition from the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV) as one of the Commonwealth's twelve Outstanding Faculty Award Winners for 2011. These awards, recognizing superior accomplishments in teaching, research, and public service, are the Commonwealth's highest honor for faculty at Virginia's public and private colleges and universities.
Butler, a marine biologist who has taught at ODU for 21 years since his graduation from Florida State University in 1988, has become a legendary figure in the university's biology department. A self-described "jock" who played championship basketball in his undergraduate years, Dr. Butler's hands-on approach to teaching and rigorous academic demands on his marine ecology students are well known among current and former students.
Nonetheless, Butler maintains a humility and approachability not always found among eminent scholars. And it's these very traits that have resulted in his many accolades bringing prestige to both the program and the university. Learn about Butler, his inpsiring approach and impressive results.

"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" & Extreme Food Drive Spark University's Spirit
It takes a lot of energy to build a home for a deserving family in just one week and a lot of spirit to inspire an entire community to help. In early February, ODU was on hand to do both.
When ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" executives selected the Hill-Burdette family in Virginia Beach as the recipients of a new home they also chose a local charity to support in the process. As the family has devoted itself to helping those less fortunate – adopting six foster children and running a small operation to feed homeless citizens in Virginia Beach – the Southeastern Virginia Foodbank seemed like a natural beneficiary for the show's efforts. The goal: to collect over 307,000 pounds of food.
Old Dominion University stepped up to both challenges, supplying students and Monarch volunteers as well as co-sponsoring the efforts to collect over 406,000 pounds of food, translating to approximately 313,000 meals to those in need. Read more about ODU's contributions to support the Hill-Burdette family and give back to Hampton Roads.

Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow: ODUAA's Student Initiatives

When you think back on your days as a student, you probably remember your senior year as a time you were most proud to be a Monarch. Today, we can report that "Senior Spirit" is alive and well on campus.
The ODU Alumni Association is working to make sure that we connect with these proud seniors so that we can sustain our relationship with them as alumni. To accomplish this, ODUAA has launched a series of events, communications and initiatives to make sure we connect with the Class of 2011 before they leave in May.
We've got everything planned: "Dinner & Discussions," celebratory parties, informative round tables, a presence at graduation and more – all to help students understand that we're here to support them after they join the ranks of the association.
If you'd like help with our student initiatives, email us. We'll find a way for you to welcome our soon-to-be members here on campus.
