  Old Dominion, A University Transformed

Looking around today, it's hard to imagine that ODU's campus began as a single abandoned elementary school. Over the years, the university has expanded to the 180 acres it graces today, from the historic buildings surrounding Williamsburg Lawn to the most recent additions including six residential buildings and a modern Student Recreation Center. Over the school's almost 80 years, the campus has grown and evolved with a distinguished and unified new look emerging over the past 10 years. As Bob Fenning, VP for Finance & Administration proclaims, "ODU has not simply changed. Today, Old Dominion is transformed." View the ODUAA photo album showcasing ODU's campus–past, present and future.

The Alumni Association's 2009 Guide to Campus

To help you appreciate the university's reinvention, we've prepared the ODU Alumni Association's 2009 Campus Guide. Whether you graduated last year or last decade, we promise you'll be surprised.

Download a pdf of the guide including a current campus map and information on a few of the newest additions.

Seeing is Believing: Tour the ODU Grounds in Person
It's rare that an alum will return to campus without saying "It's just so different today." But don't just take our word for it, see the campus yourself!

Be sure to stop by the Barry M. Kornblau Alumni Center when you visit. Our staff will welcome you back to your alma mater and answer any questions you might have.

The Office of Admissions conducts student-led walking tours throughout the year. Register for a tour online.

Filling a Void: ODU Counseling Program Serves Norfolk Residents
Thanks to the work of Dr. Danica G. Hays and three ODU doctoral students, some of Norfolk's most needy residents are receiving mental health and substance abuse counseling free of charge.

ODU students interning with the Norfolk Community Services Board provide individual and group therapy to patients in a controlled and supervised environment. As part of their comprehensive practicum, the doctoral candidates gain exposure to real world scenarios working with patients who otherwise might have gone unserved. Now in its second year, the program is one example of Old Dominion University's mission to make a postive impact in Hampton Roads while giving students practical experience.

The ODU Graduate Counseling Program is receiving national recognition as a result of this type of innovative work. Among other awards, The Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) recently named the department the top graduate program in the nation. Read about the prestigious award here.

  ATHLETICS UPDATES
ODU 3-1 in First Four Weeks of Football
Football fever has swept ODU as the young team has been off to an impressive start over the past four weeks. Coach Bobby Wilder gives credit to the ODU community for some of the team's initial success: "The support we have received from fans, alumni, and the community has been unbelievable and has given us an edge in each one of our games – both at home and on the road." For more thoughts from Coach Wilder, tune in to the Coors Light Bobby Wilder Coach's Show at Buffalo Wild Wings, broadcast on Star 94.1 and streamed live at odusports.com. Continue to show ODU alumni spirit by joining us on Kaufman Mall for the Monarch Walk before every home game.

Monarch Soccer & Field Hockey Compete with Nationally Known Programs
Both the ODU Soccer and Field Hockey teams continue to produce wins against big name opponents. In a double header on September 18, Men's Soccer emerged with a 2-1 win over Penn State while the Women's Team defeated Radford 3-0. On September 20, Women's Field Hockey, while ranked No 15, pulled off a 3-2 overtime win against then No 10 Duke. Throughout the season, both Men's Soccer and Field Hockey have been included in national rankings and with continued success should stay there. To keep track of the teams, both on and off the field, visit www.odusports.com.

  CAREER CORNER

  CMC Fall Career Fair
Despite the advent of social media, online job searches and resume services, career fairs remain one of the easiest ways to connect with potential employers. CMC employee Gary Bibik '94: "A career fair gives you an opportunity to be more than just the piece of paper or email. It gives you that opportunity to make a first impression when you might otherwise have not gotten the chance."

The CMC Fall Career Fair on Thursday, October 8 is open to all ODU alumni as well as current students. For more information, including a list of registered employers, visit CMC online.
If you are an employer and would like to participate an upcoming event, email Alice Jones.
