A. Rufus Tonelson Faculty Award

Named for Alan Rufus Tonelson, one of the first students to enroll at Old Dominion when it was founded in 1930 as the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary, this award recognizes members of the faculty for outstanding achievement in teaching, research or service. All Old Dominion University faculty currently under full-time teaching and research contracts are eligible. No faculty may receive the award in consecutive years.

Alumni, faculty, staff and students may nominate faculty for the Tonelson Award. Recipients are selected from a committee composted of two faculty members appointed by the Faculty Senate, two administrators appointed by the University President, two students appointed by the Student Body President and two alumni selected by the Alumni Association Past President.

The Tonelson Award recipient is recognized each year at the Faculty Awards dinner by a member of the Alumni Association and receives $2,000 from the Alumni Association, as well as a framed certificate and one-year campus parking pass.
